Since 2012
About Sally's
A ma-and-pa diner on Broadway Street in Springville, six miles east of Marion, run by someone who is there six days a week.
The owner
Sally Deeb
Sally bought and opened Sally's On Broadway in 2012. She has described the job plainly ever since.
“I purchased and opened Sally's On Broadway in 2012. The timing was perfect for me. Your heart really needs to be in a business like this… a restaurant becomes your life.”
“I'm usually here 6 days a week, 12 to 14 hours a day. But I'm not complaining at all. I enjoy serving my customers.”
She has since taken the space next door so the dining room could grow. The tenderloin is still the thing people drive for.
“Our tenderloin is the most popular sandwich we serve — Iowans love tenderloins!”

How the article happened
A 14-year-old wrote in
The feature was not a press release. Our Iowa runs a column where readers nominate their favorite ma-and-pa restaurant, and a 14-year-old from Cedar Rapids named Lexie Neighbor sent a letter about the place her grandparents take her.
“Granddad and Nana have been going there for years. Sally, the owner, will greet you by name if she knows you and will personally serve you if possible.”
She signed off “Yours Truly, An Iowa Farm Girl,” and noted she wanted no reward for the letter being printed. She just wanted people to try it.

The part that matters most
Austin Strong
The same article is where Sally tells the story of the Austin Strong Foundation. A family from Monticello, a fundraiser she put on for their son, and a community that showed up.
“It's so rewarding experiencing the kindness of others.”
